Expressions of interest in supervising students in the next round of UROP are now being invited
Closing date for expressions of interest is 30 March 2012
Closing Date for stipend supported places is 13 April 2012 (please note earlier closing date)
The students will be available to commence work in laboratories during the universities’ summer recess in December/January. Actual start dates are arranged by the supervisor and student. The Bio21 Cluster will co-ordinate the call for applications from students and conduct the initial screening interviews. Suitable candidates will then be introduced to individual supervisors either through your institution’s UROP representative or by the UROP Program Manager.
You are reminded that under the scheme, students are employed by your institution as casual staff at a rate equivalent to HEW 2 (+$27 per hr). Students must work full-time during some or all of the vacation periods (recommended approx. 2 weeks during the winter recess and 4 weeks during the summer recess) and 8 hours a week during semester. Individual supervisors should seek approval to host UROP students in accordance with their institution’s internal process for casual staff appointments. The Bio21 Cluster is not able to provide funds to pay UROP students.

Information for Supervisors
Supervisors are invited to to submit applications to host students in their laboratories through the UROP scheme. Entry into the scheme by students is highly competitive. Bio21 Australia Ltd coordinates the selection of students and their matching to suitable projects.
Note that UROP is not a vacation scholarship scheme but is designed to allow students to become integrated in the research group - students would be expected to hold the position for a minimum of 6 months.
Students in the scheme are employed by the host laboratory as casual staff, at a rate approximately equivalent to universities' HEW 2 level. Prospective supervisors need to ensure they are able to support the position for the envisaged period of the project and be able to arrange suitable supervision of the student. Note that with the exception of specific UROP support initiatives, the Bio21 Cluster is unable to provide financial support to host laboratories.
It is recommended that students work an average of 8 hours a week on their project during semester and full-time for part of the vacations (2 weeks in winter and 4 weeks in summer)
